Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu Acting IGP as Police Leadership Changes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

New Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, comes at a critical time as the Federal Government continues efforts to strengthen internal security and reposition the Nigeria Police Force for greater efficiency and public accountability.

According to a statement by President Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy via the X-platform, Mr Bayo Onanuga disclosed that Egbetokun stepped down after submitting a resignation letter citing pressing family considerations, bringing an end to a tenure that began in June 2023 and was originally scheduled to run until 2027 under the amended Police Act.

In announcing the development, the Presidency said the decision to appoint Disu was taken in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, noting that the President is confident in his capacity to provide steady and focused leadership during the transition period.

Who Is Tunji Disu?
Before his elevation, Disu served as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police and has built a reputation as a seasoned operational officer with extensive field and command experience.

He previously served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he oversaw policing operations in Abuja as well as in Rivers State, coordinating responses to security threats and strengthening community-police engagement.

Disu also gained national prominence during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos State. Under his leadership, the unit was noted for proactive crime-fighting strategies, rapid deployment operations and improved public communication, particularly in tackling robbery and violent crime in the state.

Over the years, he has held several strategic investigative and operational postings across the country, earning recognition for discipline, operational depth and administrative competence. His career trajectory within the Force reflects broad exposure to intelligence-driven policing, tactical coordination and urban security management.

Next Steps
In line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following that process, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The appointment signals a new phase in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, as the Tinubu administration reiterates its commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring a professional, accountable and well-equipped police system.

With his operational background and command experience, Disu now steps into one of the country’s most demanding security roles at a time when expectations for reform and effectiveness remain high.
