Babcock University Honours Sanwo-Olu with Leadership, Service Award at 24th Convocation Ceremony
...'Remain Focused, Adaptable and Committed to lifelong learning'- Governor Urges Graduates
Babcock University has honoured Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State with a Leadership and Service Award in recognition of his outstanding performance and excellence in governance in Lagos State.
The award presentation took place on Sunday during the institution’s 24th Undergraduate Convocation Ceremony in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, for the conferment of degrees and prizes. The event was attended by 3,400 graduating students, academics, parents, and distinguished guests.
Delivering the convocation lecture titled "Breaking New Ground: Faith, Grit and the Work of New Beginnings," Governor Sanwo-Olu described leadership as a responsibility that demands integrity, accountability, and service to humanity.
Addressing the graduating class, known as the ‘2026 Undergraduate NOVA Class’, the Governor urged young Nigerians to develop innovative solutions to societal problems and engage government with evidence-based ideas that can drive sustainable development.
“I am not a graduand. I am here because, as a leader, we need to continue to encourage young people, share our experiences with them and let them know that life is waiting for them out there,” he said.
“It is a humbling experience and another call for us to continue to serve. We must lead with the fear of God, understanding that people are watching us and that we are expected to provide good examples for younger generations.
"The world will not give you what you believe you deserve; it will only give you what you demand of it. I want to encourage you to remain focused, adaptable and committed to lifelong learning.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Governor Sanwo-Olu recounted navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protests, noting that true leadership is tested in times of adversity.
He highlighted Lagos’ progress over the past seven years, including investments in transportation, education, healthcare, housing and technology. He noted that Lagos’ budget had grown from under ₦900 billion in 2019 to ₦4.44 trillion in 2026, and that the state was ranked by the Dealroom Global Tech Ecosystem Index in 2025 as the fastest-growing tech ecosystem in the world.
“We established two new state universities. We are completing the largest children’s hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, introduced a digital learning revolution in our public schools, and delivered thousands of new housing units,” he said.

The Governor also commended Babcock University for its contributions to higher education and for producing graduates who have excelled in various fields.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Miss Simisola Abore described the academic journey as challenging but rewarding. She urged her colleagues to uphold the values of the institution and give back to the community.
The convocation also celebrated academic excellence as Miss Amosu Oluwapelumi emerged the Overall Best Full-Time Graduating Student and received a cash prize of ₦10 million. She attributed her success to consistency, discipline and hard work.
