Sanwo-Olu Orders Immediate Waste Evacuation as Lagos Battles Refuse Backlog

Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Residents of Lagos have recently voiced concerns over the growing heaps of refuse in some parts of the state. In response, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations, assuring Lagosians that the situation is being addressed with urgency and determination.

According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, on Thursday, the Governor directed all relevant agencies and service providers to intensify efforts and work round the clock to clear the backlog of waste and restore normalcy across affected communities.

The government acknowledged the inconveniences caused by the temporary disruption in waste collection, stressing that residents deserve a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable city.

"Governor Sanwo-Olu has consequently directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state," the statement noted, adding that additional resources have already been deployed to support the ongoing exercise.

The Governor also instructed the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and other agencies within the environmental sector to redouble their efforts to tackle the challenge.

As one of Africa's fastest-growing megacities, Lagos generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily — one of the highest volumes on the continent. The government noted that while operational disruptions may occasionally occur within such a complex system, its resolve and capacity to respond effectively remain unwavering.

The Government revealed that substantial progress has already been recorded in several locations, with residents expected to witness more improvements in the coming days.

It further highlighted its continued investment in environmental sustainability, waste management infrastructure and urban renewal initiatives aimed at building a cleaner and more resilient Lagos.

Beyond government interventions, residents have been urged to play their part by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding practices that obstruct drainage channels, roadways and designated waste collection points.

The Lagos State Government reassured citizens that the current challenge is temporary and will not be allowed to persist.

"A cleaner Lagos is not merely an aspiration; it is a commitment we will continue to deliver," the statement concluded.

  1. Government also needs to hold LAWMA accountable. Residents faithfully pay their monthly waste management fees, yet in many areas, waste is only collected once every two or three months. Accountability should be demanded from both residents and service providers to ensure the system works effectively.
