‘WE NEED YOU RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW’ - LAGOS GOVT TO NEW NURSES
…LASU VC, LASUCOM Provost charge them to serve with compassion, empathy
Lagos State government on Tuesday, urged newly inducted nurses of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, LASUCOM, to stay and work in the healthcare system as more medical workers are needed in the State.
At an induction and oath taking ceremony held
for the new nurses of the 6th set of Bachelor of Nursing Science graduates of
LASUCOM at the institution’s auditorium in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Tertiary
Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, said the State needs more of the services of the 42
new nurses having invested in their training.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Adeniran Kasali at the induction, he said: “Lagos is facing unique health challenges as it's trying to meet the health needs of over 20 million residents which are the reason you are important.
“You are to fill a critical space in our healthcare system. Your skills are desperately needed right here and right now. Lagos awaits your services so we can ameliorate challenges we face in the state.
“Lagos requires more medical professionals. We are improving the condition of our workers. Remember the investment of Lagos State government in you,” he urged them.
The Commissioner also advised the new set of nurses to improve their knowledge of the medical profession by embracing the use of technology.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, reminded the inductees that nursing is a noble profession and they must operate with compassion and empathy.
“The rigorous nursing profession requires commitment to serving humanity. Nursing is a noble profession that requires compassion and empathy. Nurses are the backbone of any healthcare system. You have imbibed integrity and professionalism, remember to carry these values with you and they will guide you.
“Be advocates for change; use your voice to advocate for improved healthcare. Be leaders in your respective communities and strive to make a positive impact. Never compromise on quality and carry your responsibility with pride,” the VC said.
Advising the inductees, the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, said “The world needs nurses who operate with compassion. You have been trained with diligence and learnt with humility so bring your knowledge to the society. Your stethoscope represents responsibility so let it guide your decisions and every life you encounter.”
The Guest lecturer, Dr. Oluwatosin Ope-Babadele, expressed that technology can only enhance the medical profession; it cannot replace the empathy expected from nurses to patients.
She said “Technology can help to bring your
ideas to life. The future is not a battle between humans and machines. AI will
not replace the nursing profession, it can only enhance it. So embrace
technology but don't lose sight of human emotion and empathy.”
