MAYFLOWER ALUMNI SEEKS GOVT SUPPORT AHEAD OF 70TH ANNIVERSARY

…Unveils Anniversary Logo As Old Students Laud Legacy of Tai Solarin
The leadership of the Mayflower School Old Students Association (MOSA) has appealed to the Ogun State Government to support the group's key capital-intensive projects, particularly perimeter fencing and large-scale infrastructural upgrades of the secondary institution.

President of the group, Mr Wale Abdul made the call over the weekend at a press parley where the school's 70th anniversary logo was unveiled in Lagos.

While commending the Ogun State government for efforts at improving education in the state, Abdul stressed that old students have already spent hundreds of millions of naira on various interventions over the years in bridging infrastructural gaps at Mayflower, founded by the late Dr. Tai Solarin.

Abdul noted that while the alumni have shouldered major responsibilities, the scale of development now requires urgent government participation.

“We have done our bit, clinics, laboratories, libraries, classroom renovations, you name it. Different year sets have contributed millions to support the school’s growth,” he said.

He added, “the government that owns the school must come in to help us, especially in fencing the school and executing capital projects we can no longer carry alone.”

Mr. Abdul announced that the school’s 70th anniversary, coming up in January 2026, would be a grand celebration of its enduring legacy, while this year’s annual Tai Solarin Memorial would be observed in a low-key manner to allow for adequate preparation.

He said the unveiling of the 70th anniversary logo marked the beginning of a coordinated effort to rally all stakeholders, old students, friends of MOSA and the broader Mayflower community, for the milestone event.

“The logo we unveiled today isn’t just a symbol, it’s a statement of identity. It incorporates the school's colours, emblem, and the spirit of excellence that Tai Solarin instilled in all of us,” he noted.

Emphasizing MOSA’s commitment to the holistic development of current students, Abdul revealed that the association is building a comprehensive student development framework focused on both academics and sports.

“Education is not just about reading and writing. We’re working with teachers and management to ensure Mayflower continues to produce balanced, excellent individuals," he stressed.

The MOSA president expressed deep pride in the role old students have played in sustaining the school, saying their contributions are driven by a shared belief in the school's founding ideals.

“All our certificates carry the name Mayflower School, Ikenne. We are doing all these so that the name remains respected and the products of the school continue to excel nationally and globally,” he said.

He urged government agencies and education authorities to partner more closely with the alumni body, noting that the vision of Tai Solarin should not be allowed to fade due to neglect.

As preparations for the 70th anniversary gathered momentum, Abdul called on all Ex-Mays, well-wishers, and supporters of the school to actively participate in the celebration.

“We want everyone to proudly display the anniversary logo and join us in making 2026 truly historic.

“We give glory to God for sparing our lives, especially those of the foundation students from 1956, some of whom may be with us to celebrate. It’s been a wonderful 70 years and still counting,” he said.
